Practice Policies and Consent for Treatment Due to COVID This consent covers practice policies and your agreement to abide by these policies during a gradual return to in-person sessions necessitated by COVID. It is difficult to estimate the length of time we will need to continue some level of distancing but I anticipate that these policies will be in effect indefinitely. The available evidence suggests the following: (1) Touching contaminated surfaces is less risky than inhaled droplets from person-to-person contact. Almost all spread of the virus comes from direct person-to-person contact by being in the same place at the same time. (2) People without symptoms are responsible for a significant number of eventual positive cases. (3) Though coughing and sneezing produce the highest virus concentration, normal talking also spreads the virus and the risk increases with longer exposure. A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences documents these points. Based on this evidence, my plan includes (1) keeping online video sessions for talk therapy and updates (2) increasing the availability of remote neurofeedback (3) conducting in-person neurofeedback at my office with masks and (4) as feasible, offering outdoor sessions with 6-foot distancing but no mask requirement. Also, I have purchased an air purifier that runs in the office throughout the day and uses UV lights and 2 filters, one of which is a HEPA filter. Requirements for remote neurofeedback include the following at home: (1) stable Wi-fi and (2) desktop or laptop with robust capabilities. The computer does not need to be new but has to have substantial memory in order for the software to run. Note that remote NFB sessions are not a replacement for in-person sessions. Requirements for face-to-face appointments include that you agree to the following: (1) For the previous 5 days, you have not had a cough, fever, runny nose or other cold or flu symptoms. (2) You have not been exposed to anyone with symptoms in (1) above. (3) If you develop symptoms, learn that you have been exposed to someone with symptoms, or experience any increased risk, you will let me know immediately. (4) You will wear a mask throughout the session (please put the mask on when leaving your car and before entering the building). Please ensure your mask covers your nose and mouth reliably. Other related practice policies include: (1) As always, parents are welcome to join a session with their child, as long as they follow the above rules. Adults or older kids who accompany adult clients are asked to wait in the car or outside. Adult clients, please leave younger kids at home. (2) Face-to-face sessions are slightly shorter than usual to allow time between clients for wiping down surfaces. (3) Hand sanitizer and disposable masks are available near the entrance. (4) I will also wear a mask. Please e-sign this document to indicate your agreement with these policies. Let me know if you have any questions whatsoever. I very much appreciate your continued patience with this process and your willingness to quickly switch to a new way of conducting mental health treatment. We are getting through this together :-)
